Sikgu privacy policy
Effective November 4, 2026
Sikgu (the "app") lets the people in one home swap short videos phone to phone. The developer runs no server and cannot collect or see any personal information.
1. What stays on your device
The following is stored on your device.
- Your home's key (an encryption key the device creates when you make a home; it is carried in the invite QR)
- The home's name and what each member is called (for example Mom or Grandma)
- Pets' names and kinds (dog or cat)
- Clips you record and clips you receive. A voice clip also carries a row of digits from 0 to 9, one for each tenth of a second, recording how loud your voice was, so the lamb's mouth can move along.
- Who watched what and when, the daily family time, and pokes
- App settings (clip length, receive in background, notifications and so on)
- Sound files for new clip notifications, made on the device by its own speech voice reading out a member's name. They never leave the device.
The home screen widget shows only information already on this device (unwatched clips, family time, pokes).
2. What goes to the members of your home
The clips, names, pets, watched records, family time and pokes above go only to the phones of people in the same home. Near or far, phones connect directly over the internet (WebRTC), and everything sent is encrypted with your home's key (AES-GCM). Nobody without that key, including the developer, can read it.
The only way into a home is to scan the invite QR shown on a member's phone. Anyone who scans it can see all of that home's videos, so show it only to your own people.
3. Outside services used to connect over the internet
To find each other, phones use these services.
- Public MQTT brokers (EMQX
broker.emqx.io, HiveMQbroker.hivemq.com): they relay only short connection notes locked with your home's key. Videos never pass through them. - Google's STUN server (
stun.l.google.com): used only to find the addresses phones connect on.
These services cannot read any content, but they can see the connecting device's IP address and connection times.
4. Permissions
- Camera: to record clips and scan the invite QR
- Microphone: to record a clip's sound or a voice clip
- Local network (iPhone): to connect straight to members' phones on the same Wi-Fi
- Notifications: family time once a day and new clips. The app never sends notifications pushing you to record.
- Foreground service (Android): when Receive in background is on, to keep saving new clips while the app is closed. You can turn it off in Settings.
5. Deleting
Settings › Leave this home deletes that home's clips and records from the device. Deleting the app deletes everything. Clips that already reached other members' phones stay on those phones, and the developer cannot delete them.
6. What we don't collect
There are no accounts, ads or analytics. The app does not read your location, contacts, photo library or device identifiers, and nothing is sent to the developer. The street's seasons and holidays are worked out from the device's date alone. Android auto backup is turned off.
7. Children
The app does not collect personal information from children. A child joins a home only when a parent or guardian shows them the invite QR.
8. This website
This site is served by GitHub Pages and uses no cookies, analytics or outside fonts. GitHub may log visitors' IP addresses to run and protect the service.
9. Contact
If this policy changes, this page will say so along with the new effective date.
